Documentary’sExpandedFields:NewMediaandtheTwenty-First-CenturyDocumentaryoffersatheoreticalmappingofcontemporarynon-standarddocumentarypracticesenabledbytheproliferationofnewdigitalimaging,lightweightandnon-operatordigitalcameras,multiscreenandinteractiveinterfaces,andweb2.0platforms.Theseemergentpracticesencompassdigitaldatavisualizations,digitalfilmsthatexperimentwiththedeliberatemanipulationofphotographicrecords,documentariesbasedondronecameras,GoPros,andvirtualreality(VR)interfaces,documentaryinstallationsinthegallery,interactivedocumentary(i-doc),citizens’vernacularonlinevideosthatdocumentscenesoftheprotestssuchastheArabSpring,theHongKongProtests,andtheBlackLivesMatterMovements,andnewactivistfilms,videos,andarchivingprojectsthatrespondtothosepoliticalupheavals.Buildingontheinterdisciplinaryframeworkofdocumentarystudies,digitalmediastudies,andcontemporaryartcriticism,JihoonKiminvestigatesthewaysinwhichthesepracticesbothchallengeandupdatetheaesthetic,epistemological,political,andethicalassumptionsoftraditionalfilm-baseddocumentary.Providingadiverserangeofcasestudiesthatclassifyandexaminethesepractices,thebookarguesthatthenewmediatechnologiesandtheexperientialplatformsoutsidethemovietheater,suchasthegallery,theworldwideweb,andsocialmediaservices,expandfivehorizonsofdocumentarycinema:image,vision,dispositif,archive,andactivism.Thisreconfigurationofthesefivehorizonsdemonstratesthatdocumentarycinemaintheageofnewmediaandplatforms,whichKimlabelsasthe’twenty-first-centurydocumentary,’dynamicallychangesitsboundarieswhilealsoexploringnewexperiencesofrealityandhistoryintimesofthecontemporarycrisesacrosstheglobe,includingtheCOVID-19pandemic.
